Danger Beware of Alligators and Snakes

With more people spending time outdoors, beware of snakes on your property. Some are venomous.  A venomous snake bite could be lethal. Snakes are dangerous to you, your family, guests, outdoor workers, landscapers, gardeners, roofers, painters, construction workers and laborers who may inadvertently step on them.  They can hide in leaf piles and are found in wooded and marshy areas.

The bite from a snake like the Eastern Coral left untreated can cause brain damage and paralysis which will lead to respiratory and cardiac failure.

The University of Florida, Florida Museum of Natural History has provided a guide on how to identify dangerous snakes.  If you or someone is bitten by a snake you should do the following:

  1. Take a picture of the subject snake for proper identification by medical professionals;
  2. Remove any rings that could restrict circulation if tissues swell;
  3. Keep the bitten limb below the level of the heart;
  4. Dial 911 and immediately seek medical attention; and
  5. Call your local poison control hotline and send them a picture of the subject snake for identification.
