As states decide when to allow businesses to reopen and when workers can return to work during the coronavirus pandemic, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been providing guidance to keep workers safe.
OSHA provided a COVID-19 Guidance for the Construction Workforce. The guidance includes these good practices:
- Stay home if you are sick
- Wear face masks
- Continue use of personal protection equipment and learn to properly put them on, wear and take them off
- Stay six feet apart where possible
- Cover mouth when coughing and sneezing
- Wash hands with soap and water, if not available use hand sanitizer
- If sharing tools use alcohol based wipes to clean tools before and after use
- Clean and disinfect frequently-touched items and areas
- Keep in person meetings short, limit attendees and social distance
- Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns
The guidance is also available in Spanish here.
When it comes to the construction workforce, states have treated construction sites differently. Several states like Florida have allowed construction sites to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic as an essential service.
In Pennsylvania construction was halted during the stay-at-home order. However, Pennsylvania will allow construction sites to reopen on May 1, 2020. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has provided guidance for the construction industry. Some of the requirements includes wearing masks, social distancing, provide hand washing stations, implement cleaning and sanitizing protocols, limit gatherings to no more than 10, staggering work shifts and breaks, limit tool sharing, ensuring workers are traveling to and from the job site separately, and identify a “Pandemic Safety Officer” for each project or work site to convey, implement and enforce these requirements.
