Nurse pushing elderly patient

It has been widely reported that some nursing homes are giving patients hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine to treat COVID-19 without the patients knowledge or authorization.  Some of those patients have subsequently died.

According to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) there are no proven treatments for COVID-19 and no vaccine.  The FDA warns that if you or a loved one are receiving hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 and experience irregular heartbeats, dizziness, or fainting, seek medical attention right away by calling 911.

HydroxychloroquineHydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are FDA-approved to treat or prevent malaria. Hydroxychloroquine is also FDA-approved to treat autoimmune conditions such as chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, systemic lupus erythematosus in adults, and rheumatoid arthritis.  The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cautions against use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to risk of heart rhythm problems.

Talking to Doctor

You should ask your loved one to give you authorization to speak with the nursing home where they are situated and you should ask if the patient is being given hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine to treat COVID-19.
