In New York, on Saturday, October 6, 2018, a limousine was involved in a crash that killed all 17 passengers along with the driver and two pedestrians. It was reported that the limo ran off the road and plowed into a parked SUV at the bottom of a hill. The passengers rented the limousine from Prestige Limousine for a birthday party, but unfortunately, it turned fatal.

The accident and limo company are still under investigation. It was reported that the company’s vehicles were cited for safety violations including the limo that was involved in the crash. It has also been reported that the limo was deemed unserviceable and the operator of the limousine did not have the proper commercial driver’s license.

It has been reported that the widow of the limo driver claims that her husband was an experienced commercial driver. She said he was concerned about driving the limo that Saturday and requested for another one to drive. She believes that the company put him in a car that was unsafe to drive.

In Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is in charge of regulating limo companies. A commercial driver’s license is required in Pennsylvania if the vehicle transports 16 or more passengers. The Commission suggests that anyone renting a limo check that the company is properly licensed and their vehicles are up to date in terms of inspections and safety.

New Jersey state law requires that every passenger wear seat belts in limousines. The driver is responsible to make sure passengers under 18 wear seatbelts.
