According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010, 618 bicyclists were killed and an additional 52,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes with the majority of the fatalities occurring between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7:59 p.m.
To avoid the chances of being injured while riding a bicycle, wear reflective clothing and a helmet and always observe the rules of the road. Bicyclists should remember that they are no different than the operator of an automobile; cyclists must abide by all traffic control devices like Stop signs and Red lights. Also, cyclists should not travel against the flow of traffic or on sidewalks. Drivers of automobiles must share the road with cyclists as well.
If you have been injured while operating a bicycle you should immediately move to a safe area off the roadway, call the police, write down the license plate number of the automobile that caused the accident and get the advice of a lawyer experienced in this area of the law.
