Transportation has been deemed an essential service during the Coronavirus pandemic in many States including Florida and Pennsylvania. Transportation includes taxi and rideshare like Uber and Lyft. It has been reported that Uber and Lyft have supplied many of their drivers with disinfectants or hand sanitizers to keep drivers and passengers safe. At one point, Lyft even suspended all shared rides to slow the spread of COVID-19.
During the coronavirus pandemic the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been providing guidance to keep workers safe. As States start to allow businesses to reopen, more people will be going out of their homes and using rideshare and taxis.
OSHA has provided a COVID-19 Guidance for Rideshare, Taxi, and Car Service Workers. The guidance includes these good practices:
- Stay home if you are sick
- Clean and disinfect car door handles and inside surfaces routinely
- Lower car windows to increase airflow
- Wear face masks and ask customers to wear masks
- Use hand sanitizer and make some available for customers
- Use tissues and trash receptacles and provide them for customers
- Limit the number of passengers and install plexiglass between drivers and passengers
- Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns
The guidance is also available in Spanish here.
