The holidays are usually a time for joy and lots of cheers. However, with the large number of people traveling on the roads there will be a sharp increase in automobile crashes and Drunk Driving (DUI) arrests.

Pennsylvania’s State Trooper’s “Operation Safe Holiday” campaign will enforce the zero-tolerance policing and requirement for sober driving during the holidays. There will be more DUI patrols on the roads and checkpoints set up to catch any drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Last Thanksgiving, there were nearly 3,000 crashes where 21 lives were lost in Pennsylvania. Of those crashes, 85 were contributed to alcohol use. It was reported that state troopers made 629 DUI arrests.

This past Thanksgiving eve, sobriety checkpoints were set up across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Thus far, it was reported that three people were arrested for DUI in Bucks County, two people arrested in Delaware County, and nine arrested in western Pennsylvania counties.

The zero-tolerance policing will continue through Christmas and New Year holidays. The state troopers suggest that you have designated drivers, wear seatbelts and drive safe.

Although the police may be out to ensure safety on the roads, it does not mean that they may have lawfully stopped and arrested you for DUI. If you or a family member has been arrested or charged for driving under the influence of alcohol, contact Attorney Richard Washington at Washington & Washington to schedule a free consultation to confidentially discuss your charges.
