Manufacturing essential items has been ongoing throughout the United States during this pandemic. Florida deemed manufacturing facilities essential businesses in its stay-home order. In Pennsylvania, only manufacturing of essentials were allowed such as food and beverage. Nonetheless, preventative measures can be implemented now and when other facilities reopen to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
During the coronavirus pandemic the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been providing specific industry guidance to keep workers safe.
OSHA provided a COVID-19 Guidance for the Manufacturing Industry Workforce. The guidance includes these good practices:
- Stay home if you are sick
- Stay six feet apart where possible
- Install barriers if workers cannot social distance
- Continue use of personal protection equipment and learn to properly put them on, wear and take them off
- Wear face masks
- Cover mouth when coughing and sneezing
- Don’t use other workers’ tools and equipment
- Wash hands with soap and water, if not available use hand sanitizer
- If sharing tools use alcohol based wipes to clean tools before and after use
- Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns
The guidance is also available in Spanish here.
